Awhina Support Services is a small local business that is family owned we acknowledge the social emotional wellbeing of everyone.  We are a team from diverse cultural and health professional backgrounds - registered nurse and indigenous mental health worker.  We have extreme knowledge and experience working in the community that enables us to understand and work effectively with the local and wider communities. We have worked in rural and remote, general practice, mental health community services. We enjoy the fact that we can work with you in the community and not in an office.  This way we get to work with you in your environment with you and your family or community members.

Our goal is to provide a service that is personalised, wholistic and encompasses cultural and faith diversities. We will help you to achieve your goals. If you or your family member needs our support, we would be happy to meet with you and discuss a plan to meet your needs.

The Soul Shack – FNQ Occupational Therapy is a registered NDIS provider on the outskirts of Cairns that provides activity-based short-term accommodation / respite care for people with disability.

We run supported five-day group stays once a fortnight. Our stays are open to people of all ages, with support provided at a minimum 1:2 support ratio.

The Soul Shack is a two-acre farm-stay property in Deeral, with a huge tropical atrium (perfect for rainy days), a fruit tree orchard, and a host of beautiful, friendly animals (including miniature horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, guinea pigs, cockatiels, cats, and dogs).

We can accommodate up to 24 guests in comfortable, air-conditioned, dorm-style rooms.

Each stay is packed with activities that have been intentionally selected or developed by an Occupational Therapist to work towards improving guests’ functional capacity and independence.

The team at The Soul Shack is varied and diverse, and includes an Occupational Therapist, Allied Health Assistants, support workers, students, carers, and people with disability.

We provide an all-in-one immersive group stay situation where people with disability can improve their functional capacity and independence, develop their social skills, make new friends, and take part in all kinds of fun and challenging activities—all in a safe and supportive environment.

Our NDIS team are a group of highly experienced Allied Health Professionals who work closely with participants to identify their needs and assist in achieving their goals.
We believe in leading change through a holistic, passionate and team driven approach.
We offer services to participants on NDIS plans that are over 18 yrs of age and in addition to assessments in our gym or suite rooms, we are also able to offer home assessments and telehealth appointments.

I'm a diversational therapist, teaching in the education sector for over 30 years that has worked in disability and now supporting people with disabilities as an allied health assistant
I can follow OT plans, speech plans, I design perceptual motor processing plans and implement them, as well as communication, social skills and personal skills. Usually 1 on 1 with support for parents and families.

Support those with development or learning delays or disabilities.
Develop individual Perceptual Motor Activities/Strategies for participants that assists with hand/eye coordination, kinaesthetic development/strength, spatial awareness and form constancy, orientation and directionality.
Explore bilateral integration by developing individual programmes for crossing the midline, core stability and left/right activities.
Work on communication through oral speaking and listening skills such as strategies to think before we speak, planning our ideas, and practising.
Work with ACD's and continue AUSLAN as well as incorporating visuals and signing into instructions and strategies.
Continue work in diversional therapy for all ages, not just children, as experience also includes the Aged Care sector.
Offer support through counselling skills for those experiencing anxiety, low self esteem or little confidence etc to develop strategies

Business hours are: Monday to Friday 9 - 5 and Saturday 9-12.

We have always been driven by our purpose of empowering our community to live a life they love. Now we have a name that reflects that purpose. Whilst we do have a new name, we are all still the same people, with the same values, with no change in ownership. Locally owned and passionate about providing exceptional healthcare to people in our region.

The excitement continues… Thriving Lives Co has now opened our new clinic in Cairns. Located at 208 Buchan Street, Bungalow (corner of Quigley Street). Our Practitioners are providing appointments Monday to Friday across all disciplines.

Exercise Physiologists:

Our team of EP's, Lauren Senini; Brianna Haydon; Rachael Lear; Paul Simmonds; Kathryn Cann; Shona Edwards; and Damien Torrisi have no waitlist and immediate capacity throughout the Cairns, Atherton, Cassowary Coast regions. David is at full capacity. We are accepting expressions of interest to increase our service delivery for people in Julatten, Port Douglas and Mossman.

Physiotherapists:

Our team of two, Jordan Bonner and Kadell Pearce have capacity for in clinic, hydrotherapy and home visits in the Cairns and Yarrabah region and are accepting expressions of interest for the Port Douglas and Mossman region.

Allied Health Assistants:

Our team of two, Glen Hayward and Evie Cox, have no waitlist and immediate capacity for home, gym, pool or clinic visits in the Cairns region.

Hayley Leonardi, a registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association, having recently completed a Masters of Guidance and Counselling at James Cook University. I am also a secondary teacher, with experience in teaching students with Special Needs, a skill I am able to utilise when working with NDIS participants.

Having many years of experience in helping individuals navigate through life's challenges, Hayley believes that everyone deserves to live a happy, fulfilled life, and she is passionate about helping people achieve that. Her approach is warm, empathetic, and non-judgmental. She offers a safe and confidential space where participants can share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of criticism or rejection.

Although we know that counselling is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to healing, Hayley specialises in Person-centred therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and is committed to helping your participants overcome any obstacles that may prevent them from living their best life. She uses evidence-based techniques to help gain insight, develop coping skills, and make positive changes in your participants lives.

Hayley is based at Life Ur Way’s office in the Innisfail Food Emporium Wednesdays and Thursdays, and happy to visit you in your home or wherever you are most comfortable.
