MPsych (Clinical) | BPsych (Hons) | BN, Grad Cert Midwifery | MAPS | FCCLP
I work as a clinical psychologist in my private practice in Speewah. I have a dual focus on helping people with psychological difficulties and enhancing health and wellbeing.
I have more than 30 years’ experience as a health professional. I've completed a Bachelor of Nursing (General and Mental Health) in 1989 in the Netherlands and worked as a clinical mental health nurse in a forensic facility.
Immigrating to Australia in 1993, I continued my career as a registered nurse with Queensland Health. In 1999 I completed my midwifery study at Cairns Hospital and continued as a registered midwife. While working as a midwife I completed a study of Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) and Master of Psychology (Clinical) and continued working the next four years as a private clinical psychologist at Cairns Doctors on Barr St and filling in as a lecturer/tutor for the psychology department at James Cook University. To diversify my practice, I also completed an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy study in early 2020.
I opened my own practice “Boonooloo Psychology and Cairns Equine Therapy” in July 2022. The clinic is centred within beautiful surroundings, allowing connection with nature that can further contribute to healing. My practice involves a wide variety of evidence-based therapies and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. I work with a wide variety of services such as Medicare, NDIS, DVA, Workcover and private health insurances.
In addition to being committed to helping individuals, couples and families reducing distress, I also work extensively with people from diverse ethnical backgrounds, including people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent and the LGBTIQ+ community.

Lara is an experienced equine therapist, psychotherapist & social worker and is registered with the Australian Social Work Association member.
Equine therapy, also known as equine-assisted therapy, is a form of physical, occupational, and psychological therapy that uses horses as a tool for healing. Horses are sensitive and intuitive animals, and when a person interacts with them, they can provide comfort, support, and understanding. Equine therapy helps people who are dealing with physical and mental health issues, such as trauma, depression, and anxiety, as well as developmental and learning disabilities.
Equine therapy can be beneficial in a variety of ways. For example, it can help people develop trust, build confidence, and learn how to manage their emotions. It can also help individuals learn how to set boundaries and effectively communicate their needs. Additionally, equine therapy can help people build interpersonal skills, develop problem-solving skills, and gain insight into their behaviour.
Lara has worked in the community sector for over 20 years, working with diverse client groups, from disability, drug and alcohol and homeless and young people.
